Kindness
I thought a lot over Christmas about kindness and the power of selfless acts. There are a couple of reasons for this. Firstly, I read a book called The Help that was so touching and beautifully written and really made me appreciate how lucky I am (I'm not going to do a book review as I think a lot of people have already read it and if you haven't then the film was released a few years ago). And secondly, I watched an absolutely brilliant film called Pride. Anyone seen it? If you haven't, you really must! It's got a brilliant cast and is based on a true story about a group of lesbian and gay activists in London who raise money to help those affected by the miners' strike in Wales during the 80's. Please - if you do nothing else this week - you must find this film and watch it. And then let me know your thoughts (I was a blubbering mess through most of it).
The point of this post is as follows: be kind to people! Pretty simple really. Take the time to think about someone you care about and consider what would make them happy. And then take some time out of your week to make this happen. Even small things are important. The whole 'Random Act of Kindness' thing that was popular a while back was great, but keep doing things like this even if you aren't being filmed or have any intention of telling social media about it. Because - I promise you - if you are kind to people then they will be kind back when you most need it. If you are absorbed in the fact that your life is rubbish and January is a shit month and you haven't got a boyfriend etc., etc., then put your own problems to one side and think about someone you know and their issues or insecurities. Not only will doing something kind for someone make you feel good, it will also distract you from your own problems and - when your mind inevitably returns to them - they may not seem that bad.
So rather than Dry January, why not try Kind January? Or maybe Be Kind for 2015.
Over the past couple of months my friends and family have been incredibly kind to me - thank you to everyone who helped me with the move (I've arrived safely - FYI) and for being so amazingly supportive throughout a pretty stressful time. I am very fortunate to have such great people around me and this post is very much dedicated to them!
